Zip named a Leader in the Nucleus Research S2P Value Matrix

Today, Nucleus Research published the 2026 Source-to-Pay Technology Value Matrix. Zip earned a spot in the Leader quadrant on both functionality and usability. We’re proud of our position in the uppermost quadrant, but there’s also a telling story in here about the evolution of the source-to-pay market.

Nucleus calls out the shift in the opening line of the report:

"In 2026, the source-to-pay market is defined by the movement of platform value toward intake and orchestration, the layer employees reach first and where spend is classified, policy is applied, and work is routed to the systems that execute it. Every vendor evaluated in this year's Value Matrix has responded by building that layer, acquiring it, or repositioning a suite around it."

The value driver of a source-to-pay deployment has shifted. Customers now look at intake and orchestration as the platform layer, with usability as a first-class evaluation criterion. This flips the traditional source-to-pay market on its head: evaluations rest less on deep feature lists and more on how effectively these solutions shape and influence employee behavior, increasingly through AI-led experiences. 

When Zip first introduced the intake and orchestration layer to procurement in 2020, many saw it as a complement to the S2P suite. Now, in 2026, Nucleus Research is pointing to orchestration as the foundation for intake-to-pay—and they won’t be the last analyst firm to do so this year.

What intake and orchestration means for the source-to-pay category

The report makes a specific architectural claim: intake and orchestration is no longer a request-capture feature bolted onto a procurement suite. It is the control point of the entire cross-functional procurement tech stack. Employees describe what they need in natural language, and a policy-aware governance layer determines whether the request becomes a sourcing event, a catalog purchase, a contract renewal, or something else. The system that captures the request shapes every downstream decision.

Nucleus identifies the impetus for this shift in the focus on end-user experience. The competitive question in source-to-pay, the report says, "is no longer which system holds the transaction record. It is which system employees touch first."

That framing rewrites how the category is evaluated. Functional checklists no longer separate the market, because the established suites all cover the full source-to-pay lifecycle on paper. What separates them is how intuitive the intake process is, the flexibility of the orchestration layer, and whether procurement teams can reconfigure workflows without an IT project.

Nucleus draws a sharp line in the report between Leaders and Experts. Leaders are the vendors "whose functional depth is matched by the ease of daily use." Experts, in contrast, "deliver the deepest configurable functionality for complex global enterprises but ask more of the implementation and administration teams that run them."

In a market where nearly every employee is a user, a platform built around intake wins on adoption.
